View of Chora, Kalymnos
Bishop Randa
Colour photographic view of the harbour of Chora (Pothia) on Kalymnos, photographed by Bishop R.. At the left edge of the foreground dominates the bronze statue of the “Sponge Diver”, placed on a marble base, while beside it an elderly man fishes seated on a stool and a child watches him. In the middle ground can be seen traditional caiques and vessels moored at the quay, while the landmark Administrative Building (present-day Regional Unit headquarters) and, further right, the present-day Town Hall with their characteristic domes dominate the scene — buildings dating from the Italian period (1912–1943). In the background the town spreads amphitheatrically, with its houses climbing the foothills of the rocky barren massif of Profitis Ilias.
