The Hall of the Poseidoniasts of Berytos on Delos
Kontos Nikos
Colour photographic view of the Poseidoniasts’ Hall on Delos, photographed by N. Kontos. This building, with its central peristyle courtyard, large banqueting hall, living quarters and cult areas, served as the clubhouse of the association of merchants, shipowners and warehouse keepers from Beirut, who were active on the island under the protection of the god Baal, identified with the Greek Poseidon. In the foreground of the image, numerous fluted column drums and marble architectural members are arranged in rows on a surface of gravel and stones. In the middle ground dominates a restored section of the peristyle colonnade, consisting of four continuous columns and an architrave.
